Chair of Medicine Appointed at UMMC

Dr. William C. Little, MD, joined the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in July of last year as professor and chair of the Department of Medicine. He succeeds Shirley Schlessinger, MD, who served for three years as the interim chair.

Dr. Little is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. His research on cardiac function has received funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1985. He has received numerous honors for his work and is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has been awarded the Lamport Award for Cardiovascular Research from the American Physiological Society, the Harrison Award of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and the 2010 Laennec Master Clinician Award of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Little earned his MD from Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia Hospital and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He has served at the UAB, the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During his tenure at WFUBMC, he was the McMichael Professor and Chief of Cardiology, vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, and vice chair and head of the finance committee of Wake Forest University Physicians. He also served as the director of the Heart Center, associate chief of professional service, and member of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital Board of Trustees. Dr. Little is chair of the Cardiovascular Disease Board and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
