The State University of New York (SUNY) announced that John F. Williams, MD, EdD, MPH, has been named as president of Downstate Medical Center. His term began on August 20 this year and will end August 20, 2014. Dr. Williams succeeds Ian Taylor, MD, PhD, who assumed the role of Officer-in-Charge when John LaRosa, MD, resigned in June. Upon the arrival of Dr. Williams, Dr. Taylor resumed his post as Downstate’s Senior Vice President for Biomedical Education and Research and Dean of the College of Medicine.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Williams most recently served as Senior Vice President of Verras Health Care International. He previously served at George Washington University (GWU) as university provost and vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He also served GWU as senior vice provost and vice president for Health Affairs at the medical center (GWUMC), and as Bloedorn professor of Administrative Medicine. Dr. Williams earned a BA in Political Science at Boston University in 1970, a Master of Science at The London School of Economics and Political Science in 1973, a Master of Public Health from Yale University in 1975, and Doctorates of Medicine (1979) and Education (1996) from GWU.

Boonshoft School of Medicine Names Dean

Marjorie Bowman, MD, MPA, professor and founding chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, has been named dean of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. She succeeds Howard Part, MD, who served as dean for 14 years. Dr. Part will continue to serve as a full-time faculty member in the medical school.
