Dr. Gerold Bepler, MD, PhD, has been named as the new president and chief executive officer of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, effective February 1 this year. Dr. Bepler, a thoracic oncologist, will also chair the Wayne State University (WSU) Department of Oncology at WSU's School of Medicine and will serve as principal investigator of Karmanos' National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center Support Grant. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bepler served as director of the Comprehensive Lung Cancer Research Center, department chair of Thoracic Oncology and program leader of the Lung Cancer Program at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. He also served as professor of Medicine and Oncology at the University of South Florida. Before his service at the Moffitt Cancer Center, he was director of the Lung Cancer Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.

Dr. Bepler earned his MD and PhD from the Philipps University School of Medicine and Dentistry in Marburg, Germany. He completed residency and fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Duke University Medical Center and received his postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, MD. He has been awarded nearly $24 million in research funding from the NCI over the past 13 years. His areas of research include investigation of predictive molecular and cell biologic markers of lung cancer risk, progression, metastatic spread, and response to treatment and outcome.
