The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has announced the allocation of $74 million to support the development of novel technologies to better assess the contribution of environmental exposures to human disease. The grants are part of the Exposure Biology Program of the NIEHS, which will focus on measuring the human impact of environmental stressors, such as chemical and biologic agents, dietary intake, physical activity, psychosocial stress, and addictive substances. The Exposure Program is one of two research programs established by the Genes and Environment Initiative of the National Institutse of Health (NIH). The 5-year initiative will bring together expertise spanning across the NIH in an effort to identify the genetic and environmental factors associated with a variety of common illnesses, including asthma, diabetes, and cancer. The following are the grant opportunities supported by the Exposure Biology Program: Environmental Sensors for Personal Exposure Assessment; Biological Response Indicators of Environmental Stress; Biological Response Indicators of Environmental Stress Centers; Improved Measures of Diet and Physical Activity for the Genes and Environment Initiative; and Field-Deployable Tools for Quantifying Exposures to Psychosocial Stress and to Addictive Substances for Studies of Health and Disease.
National Human Genome Research Institute Announces Genome Sequencing Centers
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has announced the funding of three large-scale sequencing centers, which will devote much of their efforts to The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Pilot Project. TCGA is a 3-year, $100 million collaboration between the NHGRI and the National Cancer Institute that is aimed at identifying genomic changes associated with cancer. In the pilot phase of TCGA, researchers will seek to identify genomic changes in three types of tumors: brain (glioblastoma), lung (squamous cell), and ovarian.
