Dr. Stephen E. Strauss Named Senior Advisor to Nih Director

Dr. Stephen E. Strauss has been appointed as a senior advisor to National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Elias A. Zerhouni, MD. Dr. Strauss most recently served as the first director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a position he resigned for health reasons on November 7, 2006. Dr. Strauss worked to earn legitimacy for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as a research area, and under his direction from 1999 to 2006, CAM research at the NIH grew threefold. Dr. Strauss earned his bachelor of science degree in life sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. He received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1972 and joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 1979 as a senior investigator. Dr. Strauss is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He is a member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has published over 400 research articles and edited several books. Dr. Strauss has received numerous awards from the US Public Health Service during his career in recognition of his achievements. Dr. Zerhouni has named former acting director of the NIH Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein as acting director of NCCAM in replacement of Dr. Strauss.

Dr. J. Larry Jameson was recently appointed as the new dean and vice president for medical affairs at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Dr. Jameson, Feinberg faculty member since 1993, will succeed Dr. Lewis Landsberg in the positions. Dr. Jameson is the Irving S.
