NIH Health Disparities Elimination Plan Goes to NCMHD Advisory Council for Review

Washington Fax reported on September 19 that the NIH offered its report, “Strategic Plan to Reduce and Ultimately Eliminate Health Disparities,” to the newly convened National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) advisory council for comment at the group's inaugural meeting on September 12. Congress still must approve the trans-NIH working plan. NCMHD Director John Ruffin directed council members to review the draft plan and evaluate each institute and center's contribution to NIH's overall health disparities initiative. The HHS Advisory Committee on Minority Health had reviewed a draft of the plan last December and recommended the inclusion of a mechanism for evaluation and more community outreach activities. Ruffin described the plan as “a binding document through which our dollars would be spent” and emphasized that the advisory council “has the responsibility” to make the plan as effective and as comprehensive as possible.
