The Jackson Laboratory Selects Richard P. Woychik as New Director

Richard P. Woychik, PhD, a world-renowned geneticist with a background in academia, research, and industry, was chosen in June to be the new director of The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Me. He had served on the institution's Board of Scientific Overseers since 1999 and succeeds Ken Paigen, who had been with the laboratory for the past 13 years. The search for a new director began in 1999, when Paigen announced his intention to step down as director. Woychik, who was chosen from a pool of 80 candidates, was previously the chief scientific officer for Lynx Therapeutics, a biotechnology firm in the San Francisco area. The Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, is a world leader in mammalian genetics research. The nonprofit, independent facility has a mission to improve the quality of human life through discoveries that arise from its own genetic research and by enabling the research and education of others.
