On June 28, HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced the appointment of Jerome M. Hauer, MPH, as acting assistant secretary for public health emergency preparedness. The position was created when President Bush signed the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 on June 12.
