Donald S. Fredrickson, MD, a former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), died on June 7, 2002, at age 77. Dr. Fredrickson served as NIH director from 1975 to 1981, but his career there began in 1953 as a staff scientist at the National Heart Institute. Dr. Fredrickson also served as president of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) from 1974 to 1975. Allen S. Lichter, dean of the University of Michigan School of Medicine, issued a statement in noting Dr. Fredrickson's death:
“We at the Medical School are saddened by the passing of Donald Fredrickson, a distinguished UM Medical School alumnus, former director of the NIH and past president of the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute in Bethesda.
