OTITIS MEDIA: NEW APPROACHES FOR ANALYSIS, TREATMENT AND PREVENTION: RFA-DC-02-002

Purpose: The purpose of this RFA is to support the development of alternative strategies and new approaches for the prevention and treatment of otitis media (OM). OM (i.e., middle ear infection) in children is a ubiquitous health problem in the United States that has been estimated to cost $5 billion per year. The hearing loss associated with OM can lead to developmental sequelae including delayed acquisition of speech-language skills. The widespread use of oral antibiotics to treat OM has resulted in an alarming increase in antibiotic resistance of the bacterial strains that cause OM as well as other potentially fatal diseases, including pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia.
