On March 8, a group of eight faith-based organizations, including the Christian Medical Association, filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) regarding the NIH's guidelines on stem cell research released last August (see Washington Fax, March 12). The coalition claims that these guidelines are in conflict with a federal law that prohibits federal funding of research involving the creation or destruction of human embryos. David Stevens, MD, Executive Director of the Christian Medical Association, issued the following statement in regards to the lawsuit: “The inalienable right to life that our founding fathers spoke of cannot be bestowed or removed by legislators, bureaucrats or judges.
