Ronald W. Estabrook, PhD, Professor Emeritus and longtime Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern, died on August 5 at the age of 87. A renowned biochemist, Dr. Estabrook was internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research related to the hemoprotein molecule, cytochrome P450.

Dr. Estabrook was born in Albany, NY on January 3, 1926. At age 17, he joined the Navy and attended officer’s training school at Princeton. He served in the Pacific as navigator on a minesweeper ship before pursuing his baccalaureate degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He subsequently earned his PhD at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the Molteno Institute at the University of Cambridge.
