Robert A. Fishman, MD, former Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) died on December 4, 2012 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Fishman earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 at age 22. He completed a year of residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a second year of residency at New York Neurological Institute, Columbia University Medical Center, where he worked with renowned academic neurologist, H. Houston Merritt, MD. During the Korean War, Dr. Fishman worked in neurophysiology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, DC for two years.
