USC and UKRO to Establish Kidney Research Center

The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and the University Kidney Research Organization (UKRO) announced the establishment of the USC/UKRO Kidney Research Center. The Center will operate as part of the Keck School of Medicine’s division of nephrology, in the department of medicine. UKRO, which is pledging $3.5 million toward development of the center, is a nonprofit group that supports medical research investigating the causes, improved treatments for, and prevention of kidney disease. Both basic and applied research programs will be supported at the center.

AHA Awards Presented at 2012 Scientific Sessions

The American Heart Association (AHA) held its 2012 Scientific Sessions November 3–7 in Los Angeles, CA at the LA Convention Center. Annual award presentations were made during the sessions. James B. Herrick Award

The Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association presented its highest honor to Bernard J. Gersh, MB, DPhil, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, “for his significant and sustained contributions to cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment–discoveries advancing the practice of cardiology and benefiting patients and physicians worldwide.”

Research Achievement Award

The 2012 AHA Research Achievement Award recipient was Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He was recognized “for his significant and enduring contributions to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular medicine, achievements that have accelerated progress toward conquering disease.”

Population Research Prize

The Population Research Prize was awarded to epidemiologist Aaron R. Folsom, MD, of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, “for excellence in population-based research adding importantly to knowledge of multiple factors associated with greater cardiovascular disease risk.”

Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award
