University of Michigan Medical School Appoints New Dean
Dr. James O. Woolliscroft, interim dean of the University of Michigan (UM) Medical School since 2006, has been selected to fill the position on a permanent basis. During Dr. Woolliscroft's tenure as interim dean, the UM Medical School witnessed significant accomplishments, including expansion of the school's scientific and clinical facilities, increased levels of National Institutes of Health funding, and continued growth of the university's permanent endowment. Dr. Woolliscroft earned his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency in internal medicine at UM before joining the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at the UM Medical School in 1980. Since that time, Dr. Woolliscroft has held numerous positions at UM, including professor of internal medicine, Josiah Macy Jr. Professor of Medical Education, and executive associate dean of the Medical School. Dr. Woolliscroft was selected as a fellow of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2003-2004, and in 2004, he was honored with the Society of General Internal Medicine's Career Achievement in Medical Education Award. Dr. Woolliscroft's 5-year appointment became effective July 1.
Harvard Medical School Appoints New Dean
Dr. Jeffrey S. Flier, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School (HMS) for nearly 30 years, was recently named the next dean of HMS. Dr. Flier will succeed former HMS dean Dr. Joseph B. Martin, who resigned his post in June. Dr. Barbara J. McNeil, the Ridley Watts Professor of Health Care Policy and Professor of Radiology at HMS, served as acting dean during the transition period from Dr. Martin to Dr. Flier. Dr. Flier most recently served as the George C. Reisman Professor of Medicine at HMS and chief academic officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
