University of California, San Diego Appoints Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Medical School Dean
The University of California Board of Regents has appointed Dr. David Brenner vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Brenner will fill the positions vacated by Dr. Edward W. Holmes, who left UCSD in October of 2006 to supervise efforts in translational medical research at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore and the National University of Singapore. As vice chancellor and dean, Dr. Brenner will direct the UCSD School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, UCSD Medical Center, and UCSD Medical Group. Dr. Brenner previously served as Samuel Bard Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at Columbia University and physician-in-chief of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia. Dr. Brenner, a leader in the field of gastroenterologic research, received his MD from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Medical Center. He served as a research associate in the Genetics and Biochemistry Branch of the National Institute of Arthritis, Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Brenner began his career at UCSD as a fellow in gastroenterology and later joined the faculty of the UCSD School of Medicine. In 1992, Dr. Brenner left UCSD to become professor and chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was recruited to Columbia in 2003. Dr. Brenner's research has centered on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of fibrotic liver disease. Dr. Brenner, the former editor-in-chief of Gastroenterology, is a member of several professional organizations. He assumed his position on February 1, 2007.
