Wiley W. Souba Jr, MD, ScD, chair of the Department of Surgery at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine and surgeon-in-chief at Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, has been named the new dean of the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine. At OSU, Dr. Souba will serve as both the chief executive officer of the college, in charge of strategy, finances, and administration, and as the chief academic officer. The OSU College of Medicine has seen tremendous growth in recent years. US News and World Report currently ranks 13 OSU medical specialties among the best in the country, and biomedical research funding totaled $174.7 million in fiscal year 2005, up nearly threefold in the last 5 years. Dr. Souba earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. Additionally, Dr. Souba earned an MBA from the Boston University School of Management and a doctor of science degree in nutritional biochemistry from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Souba finished his residency training at the University of Texas at Houston and completed fellowships at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and M.D. Anderson Hospital. Prior to joining the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine faculty in 1999, Dr. Souba held positions at the University of Florida, Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare. Dr. Souba has published nearly 300 journal articles and more than 60 book chapters. In addition to serving as editor of two textbooks, Dr. Souba has occupied editorial positions at many prominent research journals, including Annals of Surgical Oncology, Nutrition, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Journal of Surgical Research.
